On Presidents Day, we in the US are encouraged to contemplate the lives of our presidents. There are TV specials and movies about different presidents running all day. I've been thinking of our presidents for days now. It was fairly easy to meditate about four of the more recent presidents who made the news because they all were present at the same funeral. Here in Oregon, the flags were flown at half-mast in honor of
Coretta Scott King's passing. The
AP story about her funeral covered some of the highlights, but left out the controversy. A lot of right-wing whiners thought that several of the speeches might have hurt poor president Bush's feelings. The president was not a friend or relative of Coretta, and so was not invited to the funeral. Arrangements were made to have him there when he announced he was coming anyway. I don't usually bother to read most conservative columnists since all they seem to do is fawn over Bush and apologize for his every lie, spending excess, and blooper. Because of that, I missed most of the prejudiced remarks about the eulogies.
